Withdrawal button mandatory for webshops

New rules for webshops and online service providers

Since 19 June 2026, webshops and online service providers must offer consumers a simple online option to withdraw from a purchase or agreement. This new obligation follows from European legislation and applies to online agreements for which a statutory right of withdrawal exists.

With the introduction of the withdrawal button, the European Union aims to make it easier for consumers to exercise their legal rights. Ending an agreement should be just as simple as entering into one.

What is changing?

Mandatory withdrawal button

Webshops and online service providers must offer consumers a clearly visible function that allows them to withdraw from an agreement. This function must be easily accessible via the website, webshop or customer environment throughout the full withdrawal period.

Confirmation of receipt

After submitting a withdrawal request, the consumer must receive confirmation that the request has been successfully processed.

Existing rules remain in force

The new obligation does not change the current rules regarding the right of withdrawal. The statutory 14-day cooling-off period and existing exceptions remain in force.

What does this mean for your organisation?

For many organisations, the new obligation means that existing webshop and return processes need to be reviewed. Although the change may seem limited at first glance, it can affect several parts of the operation.

This includes:

  • Adding a withdrawal function to your webshop or customer portal
    • Automatically processing withdrawal requests
    • Customer communication and automatic confirmations
    • Updating general terms and conditions and legal information
    • Connections with order, inventory and fulfilment systems

For organisations with automated order processing, it is important that withdrawals are correctly processed within existing procedures. Especially when orders are picked, packed and shipped quickly, efficient handling of cancellations can prevent unnecessary costs and additional work.

What can you do now?

Now that the regulation is in force, it is advisable to check whether your brand meets the new requirements.

Pay attention to:

  • The visibility of the withdrawal function on your website
    • The processing of withdrawal requests within your systems
    • Communication towards consumers
    • The connection between webshop, customer service and fulfilment

By aligning these processes properly, you can prevent delays and maintain an optimal customer experience.
